Outdoor Famine Memorial Mass Today at 5
The Famine Memorial Mass is at 5:00 today, celebrated by Fr. Jim O’Donnell. The annual outdoor mass honors the 2 million people who perished or left Ireland during An Gorta Mor (The Great Hunger). Many came to Cleveland and changed the city forever. The Famine Stone is a ten-ton granite stone, engraved with a poem on the north side, and a detailed Celtic Cross on the South side. It rests along the banks of the Cuyahoga River, appropriately placed, near Irish Bend, Shantytown and the canals and waterways that employed tens of thousands of Irish immigrants. It is between the river and The Flat Iron Cafe, another Irish landmark. Please join us to honor those who came before, and sacrificed so much.
