Irish Culture for Youth

On Sunday June 28th St Pat’s Gaelic Football Club in conjunction with the West Side Irish American Club will start a new venture called Tír na nÓg (Land of the Youth).

Hopefully a lot of you will agree that the current generation of Irish-American’s aged between 5 and 18 only really get exposed to ‘Irish’ stuff on or around March 17th of each year. Some may be involved in the marching units at the various clubs so there exposure is perhaps from Jan thru March 17th. But that is really it. At the WSIA we don’t see these kids again until the next year’s St Patrick’s Day season.

We are looking to change this using the main aspects of the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association). The GAA has always promoted Irish culture through the avenues of sport, music, dance and language. To help mark the 125th anniversary of the GAA this is what we plan to do this summer in Cleveland.

In short it will be a club for the Irish-American youth in Cleveland that will meet twice per month through to October. Each session we aim to teach the youth the following:

Bacis of Gaelic Football (outdoors)

Irish language basics

The History of Irish Music

Basic (social) Ceili Dancing

Classes will go for 3 hours total each session. We have volunteers willing to give their time to help teach the various topics.

The cost will be $25 per person.

On Sunday June 28th we would like to invite both parents and their children for an orientation day – we will also have some lessons that afternoon.

The ultimate goal of this to perhaps next summer, not only start it earlier but to hold an Irish Summer Camp at the WSIA in either the form of a weekend or Monday thru Friday arrangement. Of course this all depends on the success of this years initial effort.

Please forward this to friends, family, co-workers etc. You do not have to be a member of the WSIA to join – although we always encourage this.

Feel free to email me with questions or call me 440-263-4559.
